Angel turns 25]
Maturity, happiness and peacefulness are key words that can be associated with Angel Locsin these days. As she celebrated her 25th birthday last April 23, the voluptuous star is a picture of positivism which is reflected in her bright dispositions in life at present.
“I really have so much to thank the Lord for. Apart from my showbiz career, I have also entered a new venture: the KTV-bar. I have a newly opened one named Fuel-Bar. We just had a soft opening on the day of my birthday and the turnout is good. All of us in the board are happy,” she says.
For those who miss seeing her on prime time, the dusky beauty ensures that her upcoming project would more than make up for lost times.
“ It’s a fantasy series titled Imortal. John Lloyd Cruz is my leading man. I’m looking forward to working with him. I hear only good words about him. Add to that the fact that Direk Chito Rono is handling the show. I’m pretty sure that he’ll be able to bring out the screen magic between me and Lloydie.”
Some quarters say rumored suitor Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar is a bad influence on her?
“That’s not true! He’s one dear pal. Contrary to rumors that he’s courting me, the truth is we’re part of a big group. He’s really ‘BI’ as in best influence.”
Despite the negative controversies continuously hurled upon her, Angel has just one word:
“At this point, I don’t want to entertain any negative thought. I just want to remain positive. Don’t you want to see me happy? I don’t want to get depressed. Let’s just have good vibes all the time, okay!”

Acclaim for an apprentice Photographer of the Week: Nikki Victoriano May 4, 2010, 3:52pm
Years back, Nikki Victoriano joined a reality TV show in QTV called “Hired” where he had to battle it out with 30 applicants for the privilege to become John Chua’s photographer apprentice. He did make it to the top five; but he missed his goal by almost a hairline.
Fast-forward to February 2010, Malacañand Palace, where he received the prestigious Ani Ng Dangal award from no less than the country’s president. He was in the company of internationally renowned film director Brillante Mendoza, actress Angel Locsin, reporter Jiggy Manicad, among others. The distinction is certainly an upshot from the ‘almost famous’ finish he had back from the QTV reality show.
Nevertheless, both turning points make sense in his ongoing journey as a lensman. “I never thought that photography would someday bring me on such awesome limelight. I never imagined myself being referred as a visual arts awardee,” shares the young protégée, still in cloud nine over the recognition he received.
That doesn’t mean though that he is not used to winning. In January 2008, he bagged the first prize award in the international photo contest on “Global Health Workers,” organized by the World Health Organization (WHO). That was his first award. And it only needed a blink before his “Peter Piper” image ended up as finalist in the Swatch Year of the Rat photo competition that same month.
Last year, he had three shots chosen as finalists at the World Bank Organization’s “Making The Growth Work for the Poor Young Photographer." He then topped a photo challenge on Adaptivity on Climate Change.
He takes pride in being a greenhorn. “As a young blood, I am in the process of exploring every field in photography, from portraiture to landscape, from macro to documentary, from wedding to digital arts, travel, and more. I haven’t found the playing field I want to play in. As much as possible, I want to try everything and choose later.”
Nikki’s winnings only prove that he is not a one-shot deal. His photographs consistently speak for themselves, conveying stories of everyday scenes and ordinary people, preserving emotions during once-in-a-lifetime occasions like weddings. One has to be decisive in capturing images to score the big shots.
In 2006, he decided to enroll at the FPPF for basic photography workshop. Upon diving into the world of photographers, he was surprised to learn how deep the world of photography is. He was taught the way to proper composition, the different elements of effective photography, and lighting.
Though he was at first into animation, this multi-media arts graduate realized the potent power of photography in his routine by tagging along with his dad Danny Victoriano, who is currently the president of SLR (Samahan ng mga Letratista ng Rizal).
“During my school years, I considered photography as the lowest form of media compare to painting, freehand, and other traditional art forms. It's because I thought that it was effortless and anyone could do it as simple as pointing your camera to your subject, pressing the shutter, and presto, you have a 'photograph.' My understanding of it was quite shallow and I had a negative impression that people who act like a pro and pretend to be an artist by brandishing their expensive and state-of-the-art SLR digital cameras.”
He worked initially as graphics layout artist and as backup wedding photographer for wedding studio Megapixels Digital Photography. Through this, he experienced the drama of talking to a bride and the excitement of a newlywed.
He was attending the FPPF Photoworld Asia workshop last January when he bumped with advertising photography heavyweight John Chua, who then gave him a chance to apply as apprentice assistant photographer – off screen this time. He got the job and it was a big-time tutorial adventure for him, getting hands-on exposure to the work style of Adphoto’s main man.
The confidence he had mustered while learning the ropes led him to organizing and serving as team leader of a local group of 50 photographers for the 2nd Scott Kelby Annual Photowalk held in Antipolo City.
“The best recognition I got so far is when I was awarded by the NCCA with 'Ani ng Dangal.' Who would not be thrilled to have this award. I feel like I’m a few steps away from being a national artist. The award inspires me to keep on joining photography contest and do my best on it,” he stresses.
Three other photographers also made it to the list of 41 artist-achievers who won accolades and medals for the country during a year-span beginning November 2008. The others were Erwin T. Lim, Jophel Ybiosa, and Ramon Castillo (SLR Founder).
The big award no doubt has raised Nikki’s credentials. He is now worth 'hireable' than ever. Login or register to post comments Print Email

Her best friend is an Angel (Locsin) By Rito Asilo Philippine Daily Inquirer IF YOU TALK TO CLOTILDE “LANI” ILIO, it’s not hard to imagine why she’s Angel Locsin’s best friend. Like the lovely actress, the 27-year-old nurse is as courteous as she is cautious. As they say, you are who your friends are—and Angel is no exception. So, after Angel’s ever-accommodating manager, Manay Ethel Ramos, tipped us on whom to get in touch with for this section’s special occasional feature—in which family and close friends talk about the private lives of celebrities—we got Lani to take a break from the campaign trail (her father is Mayor Joji Ilio of Malinao, Aklan) to talk about the publicity-shy, Emmy-nominated actress, whom she met on the set of Vic Sotto’s TV sitcom, “Daddy DiDoDu,” in the early 2000s. Long hours Lani recalls, “Angel was just starting in show biz then, and I was likewise dabbling in acting—though my father didn’t approve of it. But, we got very close when I began working at the office of Tita Becky Aguila (Angel’s former manager). My dad didn’t like the long hours, so I had to take another job in Makati.” Angel hasn’t changed much since her days with “Click,” Lani claims: “Sa personality, walang nagbago sa kanya. The only difference now is that she’s become so famous we can’t go malling anymore. When we go out these days, pili na ang mga lugar. Or, we hang out at home and watch DVDs. Angel is a homebody, she doesn’t like going out a lot, though we’ve been going to her bar, Fuel Up, more often lately.” What are some things we don’t know about Angel? Lani lets out a soft chuckle, “Si Angel kasi, may mga trip ’yan minsan. Once, she pleaded, ’Goy (for unggoy, their term of endearment), sleep-over ka dito sa bahay. When I got there, I couldn’t find her anywhere! ’Yun pala, she was just in her customized Savannah van, where we watch DVDs until the wee hours. Sometimes, we stay in her bathroom—naglalatag kami ng mattress and have a picnic there. “Angel is thoughtful and affectionate. Hindi ka n’ya pababayaan. ’Pag may nang-aaway sa ’yo, s’ya ang susugod— ganoon s’ya ka-protective. She doesn’t like seeing her loved ones get hurt. When I asked her about this, she answered, ‘Ayokong mandamay ng ibang tao, at ayokong problemahin nila ang problema ko.’ She confides in Ate Ella (Angel’s older sister), but I do my share. When she’s feeling down, I make sure she knows that I’m there for her. Video-game console “When we’re together, Gel doesn’t make me feel like she’s the star she is. Simple things make her happy: We eat and talk a lot—or, nagra-Rock Band kami sa Wii (Nintendo’s home video-game console).” What’s one controversy that really upset Angel? Lani carefully phrases her answer, “I saw her cry over one rumor recently: You see, Angel finds fulfillment when she gets to extend a helping hand to needy people in her own, small way—but she doesn’t want it publicized. During ‘Ondoy’ last year, one reporter maliciously claimed that the money Angel used to help typhoon victims came from an affluent Chinese businessman! That really hurt her. She said, ‘Bakit ganun? That was my money—and I worked hard for it!’ Doon ko talaga s’ya nakitang humagulgol sa loob ng kotse. “Truth is, she wants to pay it forward. She wants to help the children of Mindanao—which is why she went there with Ate Ella and Kuya Nardie—to give notebooks. Unknown to many, Gel wants to be a teacher. Once, she told me, “‘Goy, let’s take up education, for the kids! Then, we can put up our own preschool. When I was reviewing for the board exams, she would download Q&As from the Internet and say, ’Goy, i-review mo ’yan. Naawa sa akin, because she’d always see me carrying heavy textbooks all the time (laughs). That’s how sweet Angel is. “Last month, she paid me a surprise visit in Aklan. I woke up one morning at around 7 a.m.—and Gel was there! Siguro, na-miss n’ya ako (laughs)! She stayed with me for three days, and we went to Boracay. That sweet gesture was truly touching, because I knew how busy she was.” Romances Is she privy to Angel’s romances? Lani quickly quips, “Yes (laughs)! Actually, I’ve been her constant chaperone for sometime, so halos lahat, alam ko.” Can she name some of Angel’s crushes? She discloses conspiratorially, “She likes Vin Diesel—and many of her other crushes are wrestlers!” Angel tries not to get affected by intrigues. Lani explains, “Usually, dinidedma n’ya ang mga intriga—even when they’re below-the-belt. She simply doesn’t talk about them.” What is Angel like when she’s in love? Lani replies, “Hindi s’ya nagpaparamdam sa akin (laughs)! When she’s heartbroken, she keeps quiet—then, lalabas ’yan. Dinaramdam n’ya, pero hindi n’ya pinapakitang naaapektuhan s’ya masyado, kasi ayaw n’yang nakikitang malungkot. Noong nag-break sila ni Luis (Manzano), ilang weeks na ang lumipas, pero hindi pa rin alam sa bahay nila!” Is Angel the marrying kind? Lani discloses, “When she was in her early 20s, one of Angel’s goals was to get married by the time she reached 25. Pero, nagbago na ang planong ’yon ngayon (laughs)—pausog ng pausog! Now, she’s just enjoying herself!” showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/entertainment/entertainment/view/20100507-268621/Her-best-friend-is-an-Angel-Locsin
