Tuesday, October 5, 2010 Imortal: Episode 1 - The Prophecy
Finally, after several scheduling delays and abrupt launch date Imortal made its premiere last night. I don't have any expectation since I know the pilot episode normally focused on the foundation of the story. At the rate the story is going, we will see the lead cast by next episode unlike in other series. For the main characters, click here for our previous story. Episode 1 The story opens with Lyka Raymundo Ortega (Angel Locsin) transforming into Lobo to fight off vampires. It was distracting to see Lobo that huge (I missed brasca in Lobo). Lyka was defeated protecting her 5 year old daughter, Lia, and I guess this is the scene where she will die in the next episode. How's that for spoiler? Roman (Jomari Yllana) was also in the scene but did not actively join the battle. He must be the reason why Lyka was declared a traitor by Waya and made Lia (Angel Locsin as adult) an outcast. Next scene in year 1572. The scene in the beach shows the arrival of the vampire in our shore. Year 1800 shows Magnus (Jake Roxas) killing his victim in a street at night. Another vampire joins him and scampers away to find his own victim when Magnus rebuffs him. The 2nd prey is saved by a brown lobo (I really have issue with its huge size). This scene established the premise that lobo protects people from vampires. Next scene is the transformation of Roman by Magnus into vampire. He explains that only powerful men like Roman can be vampire. Roman realizes that he has to keep to keep his distance from his son named Mateo. He confronts Magnus and resents being a vampire. Of course, the director has to do this scene showing off Magnus buff body hehe. Now they have an explanation what vampire has to do to protect themselves from the heat of the sun. Roman's refusal to kill human and limits himself to animal's blood reminds me of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire. i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/r0ss2/Angel%20Locsin/Imortal/epi1d.jpg[/img] Year 1827 in the cemetery, Roman regrets not spending time with his son before passing away. Looks like Roman still refuses the ways of Magnus. In this scene, Magnus tells his life story on how Lobo killed his wife and children despite them not being vampires. A man sees them who is immediately recognized by Magnus as Lobo. Despite getting saved from Lobo's attack, Roman chooses to distance himself from Magnus. While running away from Lobo, Magnus finds himself getting invited albeit forcefully inside the vampire's prophet's house, Barang (now I am missing Nana Sela of Lobo hehe). Barang informs Magnus that he will be instrumental in realizing the prophecy. Magnus assumes that he will be the father of the baby in the prophecy. The next scene narrates how Taong Lobo defeated vampires and sent them into hiding. Peace for several years reigns until the next battle referring to their supposed extinction (Lobo story), which they overcame though Lyka. Next few scenes were lifted from Lobo TV series. Year 1984. Lara Quigaman's character (didn't catch the name) meets Roman who becomes her lover. The confession of Roman that he is a vampire reminds me of Twilight movie when Edward confessed also to Bella. Why do the confession in the woods under that sunlight? Roman takes his girl home to meet his family err more of ampire community. Recalling the prophecy, Magnus looks for a baby inside a maternity ward. Since he failed having a baby with a woman, he decides to transform into vampire a heavily pregnant woman whom he hypnotizes to hand over the baby in his care when born. Meanwhile, Lara's character dies giving birth to Roman's son. I felt a bit sad watching this scene because Roman refuses to transform his girl into a vampire for loving her too much. As prophesied, the most powerful vampire (Mateo Rodriguez) and taong lobo (Lia Ortega) were born at the same time ... Five years later, Lia is having a 5th birthday party. Lyka gives the phone to Lia to talk to her Dad, Noah, who is driving towards the house (why talk on the phone while driving when you're so close to the house?). As the car approaches, a vampire lands on its top. Lyka informs Noah through the phone about the danger. She transforms into Lobo and jumps off to help save her family. Too late ... Noah and the twins die. The writers way of saying of goodbye to Noah's character - balloons! Check out the rest of the post ... Spoiler: Lyka will die in the next episode. My thoughts: Trivia: Piolo Pascual has refused to appear in this episode because he wanted to concentrate on his TV series, Noah. On this episode: I like Imortal generally speaking mainly because I like the lead stars. I was hoping the feel would be something similar in the trailer. I understand the background is important to introduce the story so I am fine with it. The story itself is something that have been seen before - vampire and werewolves. I hope scenes similar to Hollywood movies will be avoided in future episodes. The directing and pacing make the story interesting. I am looking forward to how the prophecy will unfold. One detractor is the Lobo CGIs. I am team Waya Inc. but the vampire part looks more solid as compared to Lobo in terms of special effects. It doesn't help that I have a full collection of Anne Rice vampire novels and I love vampire stories hehe. There are few inconsistencies with the time lines with respect to history (Spaniards era) and Lobo (the story) but since they are not the main focus of the story I am letting it go and move on. What give me pause is why they have to kill my favorite Lobo characters. I know it is needed in the story but as a wolfy, it is difficult to see my beloved characters die so young. Overall, I love this episode and I don't get tired watching it again and again. Congrats team Imortal! Posted by Nicky at 9:43 AM

Imortal: Fan's review of episode 2 Review written by: AngeladikIt was a very powerful performance from Angel Locsin as Lyka Ortega in the second episode. Angel has this special ability with powerful persona roles. This time I think the director (Chito Rono) was able to bring out more steps higher, like no one here in these parts really can - the distinctive Angel's touch to the powerful Huling Bantay role. What I like about it? There were comments I read about why Jo Mari? Perhaps for good measure Angel's overpowering performance last night to the easy going role of the peace loving Vampire of Jo Marie allows Angel to shine brighter in a very powerful way. I can actually feel the Power. I will have to see it again in Youtube to see why I did when I saw it and which scenes actually made me feel it. The depth surely helps and Angel unleashes the way only she can do it. Whatever is lacking here, as critics are already fast to find one, I'm more than pleased. As long as it brings out the best from Angel the better for international producers to notice why Angel should be in their major projects. There I hope to see more of what we see Angel can still do. Actually I was not fully satisfied with Lyka in the Pilot although it was really good too even with the short exposure. But for the second episode, I could actually feel the Power! I'm so pleased and hoping to see more. If a local director can bring this out from here, there are still intangibles coming from Angel which I know she's capable of. The better if she is given more directors to explore them. [several hours later ...] I think the 2nd episode was still the best. Nope, I have not touched Youtube yet. I think the Power comes from the acting depth and style of Angel. Of course, she's at her best usually portraying heroic powerful characters with a lot of heart. Maybe that's something coming naturally because it's very near of who she is. In playing the role of Lyka, you also see that caring motherly about her character. Even if Angel's not yet a mother, you can see she's able to essay this role plus the part of her Huling Bantay role she's powerful but in control, the gentle with a big heart leader all at the same time. The gentle side and the fierce side of course we see Angel captured here. That's the nice to see. But I guess I like to see Power so it's no surprise I find the 2nd episode's display attracting me more. That's the neat thing when Angel's in an action scene and in the case of the 2nd episode including the acting there. This might be the age of stuntmen and women and special effects tricks to make the actors look good doing action roles but with Angel conveying strength and power its really no big deal. Angel's a natural doing them. She can easily look better than any actor actually because she's a real deal action movement actress. She does action scenes so well and looks so good doing them. A guy actor can even be good doing action scenes but would not look as good as Angel.

Imortal: review of episode 3
Review written by: AngeladikThe 3rd episode somehow tapers off from the Power display of the 2nd episode. Suddenly the discerning Lyka is quiet and just feeling her way. The center of attraction for the 3rd episode seems to be the young Mateo and Lia. The 3rd episode is actually establishing the connection from Noah and Lyka, Roman and Lyka, parents to Mateo and Lia and how their families connection all began. It's like unfolding a story so it's an establishing type of episode where it's not exactly as cinematic as the 2nd, still my fave episode, but something of more like the 1st where they establish the history of all vampires and lobos. The 3rd establishes the connection of the 2 destined special people of their respective tribes - the vampires and lobos, actually both half breeds, although Lyka also is while it's like a 1st for the Vampires in Mateo. In a way Roman and Lyka take a back seat in this episode to establish the connection of their children. To excite us for the coming of the young adults Mateo and Lia and how its destiny their paths cross and will again. Whether it's the Lyka or Lia role nobody excites a fan like me more than seeing Angel as the center of attraction. Like I've been saying the best reason I watch any of her TV series is watching her and her performances so that's how I assess this whole thing. Honestly am not into Vampires or even Lobos but watching Angel always is interesting and she's very good doing this one. No, I have not even seen any of those in vampire movies or hit TV series from abroad. BTW for added feedback, we just passed by an Angel ad billboard and guess what? Everybody seems to be really talking about Imortal and people are really watching. That's nice to know...like a lot are actually watching. The series of course is not your typical Pinoy soap and the catchy teasers must really be generating a lot of interest. One such interesting part is when we see Lyka with fierce eyes swinging her head up and bending low. It's a very eye catching scene actually because she's like a fierce half human half lobo there. I guess we will not be seeing the Power as much anymore from Lyka as she's going to die in the 4th I suppose episode. We will all be waiting for the next Angel then - the grown up Lia and with Mateo to follow. Cant wait? Yeah but we will have to watch as each episode unfolds. Again, having to bear with establishing connecting episodes. Actually, they do it in non fuss quick way but I guess for an Angel's fan everything really is more interesting when it's Angel taking center stage so don't blame this fan. The CGI lobos actually look better for the dark scenes but in broad daylight scenes its kinda distracting. It's much like in Twilight and I do remember mom saying the part when Lyka transforms to Brasca looks better than the CGIs in Twilight. Its different now with no Brasca around. the one where Lyka transforms inside the church is also worth remembering although when she's finally Brasca well looses steam actually. The dog is not exactly a fierce animal and looks so cute and tame. Let's see next how the dying Lyka scenes happen. We had a glimpse already of that in episode 1. Let's see what more they're showing us for the actual retelling - better be good. Again, direk was able to draw out a very impressive powerful performance from Angel for episode 2 so let,s see what happens in the dying scene of I suppose episode 4. Looking back at Lobo, I never really liked that church scene of Noah and Lyka as Noah was dying - too tearjerker which btw looks to be that way again whenever Piolo appears in the preceding series Noah. It doesn't really serve Piolo doing depressing scenes so engaging the earlier series Noah to too much conflict and drama is not exactly watchable I dunno it's just me. I hope the dying scene of Lyka will be something to please my sensibilities more this time around. Hoping for more brilliance from Direk. C'mon' we want you doing that for Angel let's show some more. You know it's really up to Direk to come up with those scenes. Not the usual tiring typical Pinoy dramatics, let's be original and creative, please us more. Angel can deliver but it's up to you Direk to come up with what is brilliant to watch.

Imortal: review of episode 5 Review written by: Angeladik
Episode 5 is all about the young Lia and Mateo. Well, more of Mateo actually please ABS make sure with Lia grown up its the other way around. The young Mateo is the better actor and the better looking child actor so that's a good choice actually but you know me as usual looking out for when the grown up Lia comes out. Finally when she wakes up from her dreams, there I am smiling to see Angel Locsin - like a real fan. Well, she just ignited the screen there even if it was shot from a barely lit bedroom. Then there's another scene where she's wearing a sleeveless shirt showing the mark engraved by Lucille - loving these scenes. Well, she had to follow that brat of a daughter of Lucille giving her those orders like picking up lost jewelry under the table with guests around? What kind of scene was that? Well, at least Angel looks great doing it - the redeeming factor. The usual of course first meeting is Mateo again daydreaming at night looking at the tall Elle Tower and Lia ordered to go there to pick up something. Mateo's car almost hits Lia as she stops her taxi to get to the building as usual on orders from the brat daughter of Lucille to get something there. I like the last part most when the grown up Lia and Mateo comes around. Oh I remember there was a nice part there with the young Lia and Mateo shown on different screens what was happening to them - parallel events in their lives and how they meet again as young adults. I can't wait for next week - more Lia of course and Mateo making it more interesting.

Analysis of Characters of Lia and Mateo
There's something about the character of Lia. She follows orders but she's a fighter. It's not exactly like Lyka when she was young. So, that's a welcome departure, seeing something else. Actually I like the character of Lia.
Then Mateo this time John Lloyd Cruz appears he's also playing a strong persona character. Here, both of them are. That's so great because they can both pull it off well.
Yup! Good roles for the both of them to explode on screen like Boy Abunda said in the Buzz, that's what he meant. Right there you can feel it! So it's not an overstatement from Boy. I'm liking this more to Lobo's Noah since I feel Piolo Pascual doesn't have it in him to bring out fierce in the role he does, which JLC can.
-angeladik
With both Angel and JLC doing this strong persona roles, I'm loving it actually and they get entangled romantically too. Now that's a nice recipe for a formula hit TV series you have to agree Nicks.
